Analysis – Album Adverts

Advert 1
Artist/Band: Michael Jackson
Album: Number Ones
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P3HiuWl_WBU

The album is introduced by a voice over, this simply introduces the advert with the name of the artist and the album name, after this, it simply allows the video to speak for itself. Until a few seconds from the end, in which the voice over resumes and gives the viewer more detail, such as the amount of songs on the album (along with other information).

The video footage used within the advert is a mixture of footage taken from the music videos of the track, and also, specifically designed graphic fills for the album. The footage from the music videos is the most popular and most recognisable work of the artist. The relevant audio track is also played between the footage, sharply changing, via jump cuts, from one track to another.
Only at the end does the viewer see the album cover, and they are shown the fact that there is 4 different covers available, all with different poses on the front. Throughout the advert, it is revealed were these poses came from, using the original footage, and then causing a transition between the footage and the album cover, forming a sort of graphic match.

Advert 2
Artist/Band: Guns N’ Roses
Album: Chinese Democracy
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zyPMZ0CRYeE

Unlike the Michael Jackson advert, this advert is very simple, and more obviously, much shorter in length. This adds dramatic effect to the album release. Due to the nature of this album release (such a large time gap between this album and the previous one – 15 years), the advert plays on this. Using dramatic music and effects, building tense up until the release date (which is revealed at the end of the advert)

Although the advert features very little sound from the artists themselves, the few seconds that are revealed, sound chaotic. Maybe hinting at the bands troubled past?

Advert 3
Artist/ Band: Oasis
Album: Don’t believe the Truth
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r65s30HDb2Q

The first thing that the viewer is shown on this advert is the name of the artist, “Oasis”. This is representative of the “in your face attitude” of the two main members, the Gallagher brothers. After this brass introduction, the following footage is in a “making of” / documentary style, as there is a camera filming another camera operator, who in turn is filming the band. The name of the album is constantly present in the background, but is never vocally acknowledged until the end of the advert.

The entire advert is shot in black and white, this fits in with the colour scheme of the album cover, making a more obvious link between the album, the advert and the band. Making it easy to recognise, and hopefully increase the number of sales due to easy recognisability.

Only one backing track is played throughout the entire length of the advert, this song is probably the most successful song of the album, hence its inclusion as the main backing track. The only other audio overlay is that of the voice over at the end, even then, this is the most minimal of intrusions, in which the voice over simply states, “Oasis, Don’t Believe the Truth, Out Now”

Advert 4
Artist/ Band: Compilation
Album: Kerrang! The Album ‘08
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mqSTit_81s

This advert is one of the longest adverts I have chose to look at. This may be due to the fact that this album is a compilation of lots of other artists, as opposed to one bands effort.

This album is the epitome of a stereotype of a rock album, the voice over introduction is said in a typical “rock” voice, slightly gruff and unforgiving. The use of colours, mainly black and red, is prominent through the advert, again, enforcing the stereotype. And finally, the use of skulls completes the stereotypic triplet.

The main and most popular songs from the album are introduced by the bloke in the advert, as soon as he has finished introducing the song, the audio of that song builds up and over rides his vocals, the video for that track is also playing on a blue screen behind him.

This same man that is featured in the video announces that this album is for everything, listing all the different genres of music, and also listing the tracks that are contained on the album, in an effort to prove his initial sentence, making the album more popular, and ultimately, selling more copies.

Advert 5
Artist/ Band: Compilation
Album: Ashes to Ashes OST
URL: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G8hwolHzxP4

This is the first album I have looked at which accompanies another medium of media (in this case, a television series). Due to this, the advert uses a character from the series as its voice over, using his same brash and aggressive style to almost force the album onto its listeners. However, as the people that will pay the most attention to this advert will know, (these people more than likely watch the show), they will understand that the voice over (Phil Glenster as DCi Gene Hunt) is meant to add a “touch and cheek” style to the advert, and they will understand the humour within.

Although no footage is used from actual music videos, clips from the TV series are used, and appropriate clips are used for each song, for example, a fast paced song, will have an action sequence as its designated clip. This use of footage also advertises the TV series, as this advert will more than likely be played during the advert breaks (or straight after the show depending on the channel), to ensure that the correct audience views the advert, and maximise sales.

Advert 6
Artist/ Band: The Killers
Album: Sam's Town
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

This is a very simple advert, the band is the main focus of it having them located in the centre (although aligned slightly closer to the top - vertically), they are still the most important thing on the advert. The extremely simple colour scheme only consists of a limited number of colours and have quite a large volume of text.

Advert 7
Artist/ Band: Madonna
Image and video hosting by TinyPic

Again, this is an extremely simple advert album, using a black and white colour scheme with the artist as the main focus of the advert. The cover quite simply listed the artist name and the date in which the album is being released. We aim to use this similar kind of simple style model in the creation of our adverts
